Tired of having always a lack of “frame” and depending many times on strange computers / beamers/ screens, etc.. I decided to modify a little bit the output of what I was doing and made a set of printings in photographic paper.

the source of theses images are real pictures taken in Berlin.  mostly graffiti and industrial destruction.
Many times you can find this things together but not “mixed” : ), I just started to be fascinated about places where the graffitis go out of the wall and they start to colorize many things (intentionally or not) in the surroundings such as plants, water tubes, electricity boxes, screws, metal-trash…
I used for this serie a digital reflex camera with a russian 50mm lens (big aperture) and without flash..
In order to get the maximum depth of field, I focused by moving the camera back and forth until having the perfect image and not by using the focus ring.

The original images are really nice, but I wanted to create with them something more personal, complete and abstract. For that purpose, I made a program with the Open source software “pure data” that reads the pictures, applies random processes to them and allows me to render a big and nice new picture with the same quality and size than the original pictures from my digital camera.
The software can run in realtime and show one by one  all the different possibilities of combination between the pictures and the different processes applied.

The size of this special serie it´s 6 mpix, enough to print it in A3 (29x 42 cm)  with perfect quality.
The next serie will be 12 mpix, (A2, 42x 59 cm)
there will be also some copies in A4

Dialogues it’s an interactive installation where the interaction happens between the people and the computer becames just a tool for “augmented interaction”..

This installation invites the people to “play” and start a “non verbal communication” with the people that stays in the other side of the “Wall”.

Basically, the setup consists in a computer, two screens* , two webcams, two microphones and two speakers.

the installation it’s programmed in free-software, that makes it more portable and multiplatform.

The machine can be setup also to run automatically the installation, then, nobody has to worry about turning the machine on/off and about power failures.

In the end of the year 2009, during an one week “residency” in Oslo,  invited by the artist, musician and pioneer “telex spammer”  Per platou. , I worked on the Telex to add a electric/ mechanic extension to it.

Basically..  I added the Telex an USB port..

The software to reproduce music notes following the “boudot” tape / score, was coded part in Berlin and part in Norway…  I´m still polishing the “letter recognition” thing. But the basic functionality works and it´s really plug & play.

DESCRIPTION:

A telex its a technology that appeared in the 30´s and basically allows to send text messages over the telephonic line. It´s a clear precursor of what today we know as “internet”..

The way the Telex work it´s by mechanically encoding/decoding  all the letters and the numbers in a “plain” 5 bit encription. when you type a message in the Telex, first you generate a perforated paper tape that has a middle  continuous file of small holes (used to track the tape) and 5 files more of dots.. Each column represent a “character”, this can be a letter or a number, but also a special messages like “move paper down”, “go back to left margin” “ring the bell”…  This code of 5 bit it´s called “boudot”.

After you have “encoded” your text in the tape, you can insert it in the “reader” and then when you press the “send” button, the Telex will read the tape, write it into paper and send it  to the number you have dialed at an aprox speed of 240 characters per minute (~ 4 per second).

THE MISSION:

Convert the telex into an experimental musical machine.

1_read the perfored tape and transform the combination of holes into notes/chords/ rythm

2_send midi “syncro” to any midi software

3_being able to control the main speed of the telex

4_add usb “plug and play” implementation into the telex to send the midi notes and the synchrony to any software

5_ add 5 piezo microphones to capture the real sound of the telex while it´s working.

This is an audiovisual performance done entirely in pure data (free software), the patch work in an pseudo-autonomous mode and the performer can only infuence it. There are many sensors (accelerometer, infrared, light..) that can control any parameter of the video or audio.. The sensor in the screen generates changes in one layer of the audio depending on the luminosity of the visuals.
The perfo was presented for first time in Rome in the liveperformersmeeting 09.
The video are photograps and videos taked in Galicia and Berlin. The oríginal audio has three parts and was composed with “hardware”+ field recordings done with self made binaural microphones and processed in Pd.

TRIoon is a live oriented AV project bringing together in a unique jam session three experienced independent artists with diverse backgrounds and approaches. A TRIoon performance is a bending of time in realtime: where moments in time are reassembled using the resonant and the electrical, using tools from a 1000 years of sonic evolution, colour, tone, light and shade. TRIoon explores the realms of method, discipline, chaos, thought, feeling, boundaries, nation, culture and technology, improvising a narrative in realtime.

Armed with a guitar, a bass guitar, a box of children’s instruments, found objects, a radio, FX, self-built Minitronics and 3 laptops which they refuse to synchronise, TRIoon responds to the moment taking the audience on a total rollercoaster ride of the senses encompassing fragility, intensity, movement and stillness.

TRIoon is an international collaboration between producer/musicians Dr.Nojoke (Germany) and J-Lab (UK) & Spanish musician/visual artist, Servando Barreiro operating mainly in the Netaudio and Open Source community. At the moment they are based in Berlin, Germany. TRIoon presented their debut performance at Club Transmediale 09 in Berlin.

Lightbox art

Lightbox is a large-scale Camera Obscura environment from within which viewers can experience current Antarctic environmental conditions, surrounded by a multitude of light refractions and visual imagery projected through custom lenses. The audience can explore the somewhat mystical qualities of those optical effects generated by the Aurora Australis as seen from a Camera Obscura. Lightbox serves as a crossover space where ideas about optics, light, meterology and design meet.

Produced in consultation with Antartica New Zealand, NOAA and Anthony Powell at McMurdo Station, Antarctica.

Karen Curley is a visual artist, interactive designer, experimental film-maker and Lecturer in Digital Media at the Institute of Communication Design at Massey University, Wellington, New Zealand. With a diverse background encompassing Philosophy, Film Studies and Multimedia Systems, she explores the creation of interactive spatial experiences across a range of electronic and kinetic media.

Antony Nevin is a Lecturer in Illustration, Animation and Visual Communication in the Institute of Communication Design at Massey University, Wellington, New Zealand. He is interested in exploring how we can create engaging ways to view and interact with the world using both digital and analogue technologies and how in turn these interactions can affect the participant or viewer.

Time machine it´s an interactive video/sound installation released on november 08 for a collective exhibition in the gallery Hbc kollektiv in Berlin.

Time machine basically shows what the camera it´s capturing in real time so when you see the screen it´s almost like seeing a mirror, but the fun starts in no much time..
In the moment that you heard a “click” noise, the screen will show the “past” time, and then, you probably will see what where you doing some seconds ago.. after certain time (random) the machine will show again the present time. This feature makes the installation really unpredictable and more funny. For some moments you can have the feeling that the installation really knows what you are doing.

Time machine it´s a software that can be installed in any computer and can be adjusted to start automatically so it can be running in an exhibition without giving problems because of the adjustments. Once the program it´s installed, you can forget about the keyboard and the mouse.

It´s difficult to explain but definitely easier to understand when you see it live.. I hope this video can help. ; )
